Why law firms use vanity numbers

Legal advertising is built on recall. A personal injury firm buys a billboard on the highway, a radio spot during the commute, or a bus bench. The person who needs a lawyer rarely calls on the spot. They remember weeks later, after the accident or when the letter arrives. A number they can still recall then is worth more than a clever slogan.

That is why so many firms put a word in their number. LAW and LEGAL work for any practice. Injury firms often choose words that describe the client's situation, such as HURT or CRASH.

Check your state bar's rules first

Lawyer advertising is regulated state by state, and some rules mention phone numbers directly. The Florida Bar's Rule 4-7.13, for example, prohibits advertising, telephone numbers included, that promises results or implies tactics the rules forbid. A number that spells something like WE-WIN may not pass review there. A word that describes what you do, such as LAW, or the client's problem, such as HURT, is a safer choice. Read your own bar's advertising rules before a number goes on a billboard.

Where it earns its keep

  • Billboards and bus benches, where people have a few seconds to read it.
  • Radio and TV, where a word is far easier to say than ten digits.
  • Business cards and intake paperwork, so existing clients refer friends.

Calls and texts

Calls ring the phone you choose, which could be your cell or the front desk, and missed calls go to that line's voicemail. Texts arrive as email, so an intake coordinator can read them. Three-letter words such as LAW and SUE are the easiest to find as local numbers.

Which of these words you can get

The shorter the word, the more numbers can spell it. Toll-free is one national pool, so a word that is taken in your area code can still be free there.
